Transitioning Beauty of the Week

Euniqua Neal
Whitsett, N.C.

How long have you been transitioning?

I've been transitioning for three months.

If your hair had its own personality, how would you describe it?

If my hair had its own personality, I would describe it as passive aggressive. Though it feels soft and cozy, it is aggressive on the inside if not tender, loving care is provided to it.

What is the most daring thing you've ever done?

The most daring thing I have done in my life is the big chop. Prior to doing so, my hair was to my shoulders. Though it was long, I do NOT regret it one bit. I am learning my natural hair one day at a time, and I love what each day has to bring.

Who is your style or hair icon and why?

I must say Billie Holiday is my hair icon. I absolutely loved the way she used flowers to influence any hairstyle she desired. I feel she certainly influenced the flowers as accessories today.

What song or album makes you feel most empowered and beautiful?

The album that makes me feel beautiful and empowered would be Jill Scott's The Real Thing—Words and Sounds, Vol. 3. I feel the album as a whole helps me to relate to my transitioning and how to deal with various situations, such as other individual’s responses to my decisions, how to deal with my hair texture day to day, and how to understand my hair.
