Breaking Bad: Marquita's Struggle with Hair Habits
by Marquita Robinson
If you’re anything like me, you do not miss the relaxer
at all. However, the relaxed hair routine is still somehow in your system. Of course, you’ve watched videos and have read every single article on this site, but there are still small habits you need to learn to let go. Here are some of the bad habits I needed to kick in order to better take care of my new natural hair:
Relaxed Bad Habit #1 Using Products from the Relaxed Days: That giant bottle of shine serum? That hair-stripping shampoo? The price you spent on it, doesn’t justify using it on your natural hair. I had to just kiss some bottles good bye. If you tried to use some of those old products, do your hair a favor, clarify it, do a serious deep condition
, build a fire, and burn your old products. Or, if you’re not into dramatics, give them to your relaxed friends!
Relaxed Bad Habit #2 Shampooing!: It’s a habit. You set out to wash your hair and you reach for the shampoo. But, with a TWA and almost daily washing, shampoo can really do some damage. I’ve learned that both my hair and my scalp are at its best when I clarify every two weeks and stick to conditioner only for the rest!
Relaxed Habit #3 Laziness: This is less of a habit and more of a mindset. Some days, I miss the ability to just comb out my wrap and walk out the door. Unfortunately, that doesn’t work with my natural hair. I’ve traded in the 3-hour wash and style sessions for daily, 15 minute “refreshes.” It’s a good trade off, but I still have to remember to set aside time to refresh my hair. OR, to do a wash n go, which takes longer than the two seconds I pretends it takes
Relaxed Habit #4 Constant Combing: The reality is that I feel like I need to give my hair a good “clearing out” once a day. But, really one good detangle a week with some finger detangling
in between is all I really need.
Of course, I’ve developed some new natural bad habits too:
