Lisa Price Reveals the Benefits of the New Hair Milk Collection

We sit down with Lisa Price as she talks about the new and improved, lightly scented Hair Milk Simple. Perfect. Curls. collection!

Q: How did the idea for Hair Milk originally come about?

Lisa: I started my company back in 1993 and my thought process at the time was that I was making products that were food to your skin and hair. Once I figured out how to make different textures and consistencies of products, I named them after the foods they reminded me of like Butters, Jellies, Soufflés and Milks.

Before there was Hair Milk, there was Body Milk. It was a lotion product at the time, and I remember looking at the Body Milk bottle one day and thinking, "What would it be like to have a lotion for my hair?"And with that thought, Hair Milk was born in 1994.

For me it was love at first try. My curls finally had a product that made them soft but not greasy, defined but not hard and without any alcohol to dry out my hair. I loved it, and I hoped others would too. And, 18 years later, it is still No. 1 in my home and No. 1 in sales.

Out of the six people in my house, only one of us doesn't use Hair Milk, and that's because my dear hubby, Gordon, is bald. But when he was rocking his ponytail back in the 90s, he used it too.

Q: Why did you decide to revamp the Hair Milk line?

Lisa: Even though something may be No. 1, it doesn't mean it can't get better. In the case of Hair Milk, I wanted to update the packaging to make it easier to use. And, the only complaint that I would ever get about Hair Milk was about the scent. For some, the lemongrass was just too much, and they were either tolerating it because they loved the product so much or not buying it at all because they could not get past that barrier.

Even in the beginning, the intent was to have a mélange of herbs and flowers to lightly scent the hair and after 18 years, I truly believe this new scent is the one. It is lemon verbena with a very soft and powdery mix of rose and jasmine. It is gorgeous and barely there.

I was so happy with this new scent that I decided to use it in all of the new Hair Milk products. So, here's the breakdown:

Hair Milk Original Leave-In Moisturizer is the original Hair Milk formula that you and I have loved for 18 years, updated with a new scent.

Hair Milk Lite Leave-In Moisturizer is a new formula from the previous Lite. It’s even more absorbent; it disappears on the strand, leaving behind zero oil on the hair.

Hair Milk Co-Wash is our Cleansing Conditioner, which is a lather-less cleanser for softer, frizz-free curls.

And, last, but certainly not least, is the Hair Milk Pudding. My, oh my...this stuff is the ish! I LOVE it. I did not think after 18 years that anything could treat my curls any better or as good as Hair Milk Original, but the Hair Milk Pudding gives me even more definition with a buildable, soft-to-the-touch hold.

Q: What does it contain that is beneficial for the hair?

Lisa: The Hair Milk formulas, from the Co-Wash to the Pudding, have ingredients like Agave Nectar for intense hydration, Pro-vitamin B5 for strength and Shea Butter for softer, tangle-free curls, just to name a few.

Q: How do you think this product differs from all the other curly girl products claiming to tame curls out there?

Lisa: I know that these are my babies, and I am speaking like a proud mama, but a mama also knows her children better than anyone else, and I am always going to speak the truth.

What makes these special is the 18-year history of the Original. Hair Milk Original has been taking care of curls before any of us ever had a conversation about curl care. When today's curl bloggers were in elementary school, Carol's Daughter Hair Milk was moisturizing curls. I also feel that our process is simpler and easier to follow, and I LOVE that the Pudding will give you great definition without making your hair sticky or tacky. Yum!!

Q: What advice do you have for women who still have not managed to discover or style their natural curl pattern?

Lisa: Be patient with your hair and your curls. Don't try to force your hair to do what it perhaps cannot do. Find a great stylist to help find the best overall shape for your curls. One thing that makes my hair so easy to maintain is the fact that I have the right cut. Without it, my less curly layers would be overgrown and swallow up my curly layers, and a lot of definition would be lost.

The Hair Milk Collection is available now on the Carol's Daughter website!
